Lets Turmeric About It!

March 23, 2016

So when I first started incorporating turmeric into my daily life, I will admit I was a bit hesitant. Why you ask? Well.. it's because I didn't know what the heck to do with it. Seriously, not a clue. Do I cook it? Grate it? Juice it? Does it need to be washed? Peeled? I had lots of questions and was overwhelmed with info for the net that I decided I would just figure it out myself.
New things can be scary...  but whats even scarier, not trying new (HEALTHY) things because you don't know what to do with it.  So learn from me ( especially if you are just starting out on your green juice/smoothie journey), I have made lots of mistakes and remember WE ALL START OUT NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO! It's like when we learned to ride a bike as a kid,  at first it's hard, really hard but after a few times of falling and getting back up, you were pedaling fast and furious down your neighborhood street, sippin' your Capri Sun. Am I right? So don't be hard on yourself and give it a little time, you will soon be a green juice/smoothie pro, I promise.
So my first encounter with this gem of a root was 7 or so years ago when I started really getting into green smoothies and juices. Now when I first started I had NO CLUE what I was doing. I had recently gone vegan and hadn't really ventured that much into the green smoothie/juice world. I may of had one or two when I was somewhere that served them, but for the most part, didn't have clue but thought it can't be that hard to make my own. Went out bought a juicer and the fun began and with trial and error I learned quickly what to do and what not to do. My first experience juicing turmeric didn't go well at all. It was a disaster.  I put the entire root  ( I'm not even sure I washed it but always make sure to wash all your veggies and roots before juicing them) into my juicer along with my other veggies and thought " score, this is going to be amazing"! Boy was I wrong.. I just remember thinking " how on earth do people drink this sh*t"!  I was a hot mess when it came to what and how much of things I could put in my smoothies or juice... SLR Tip: Only use up to a 1/2 inch of the root in your smoothie/juice. Anything more than that, it will be very strong and have a kick to it.
If you aren't incorporating turmeric into your daily routine then stop what you are doing and take note of why this root needs to be in your life NOW!

1. Anti aging benefits: Heck yay! Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory so it reduces redness or other skin irritations. It’s antibacterial, so it’s great for blemishes, acne and skin balance. It can improve texture of the skin since it is an exfoliant and it's also rich in antioxidants. Try this easy DIY facial mask:
  • 2 tbsp. of flour.
  • 1 tbsp. of  turmeric
  • 3 tbsp. almond milk ( or reg milk if not vegan)
  • A few drops of agave nectar ( or organic honey if not vegan)
  • Mix everything together
  • Apply a thin layer to your face and let it dry for 15-20 minutes
  • Rinse with cool water and then apply either  argan or coconut oil (or favorite moisturizer) to your face. I will sometimes do a face scrub before and after the mask if I really want my skin to glow.
Couple of things to note prior to doing this mask. Wear an old tee shirt, one that you don't mind getting orange on if some happens to fall off your face, so no SLR swag! Only apply a thin layer ( don't cake it on) and make sure to get your neck, it needs some lovin'  too!

2. Anti-Inflammatory: Like mentioned above, turmeric is an all natural anti- inflammatory. It's so potent that studies have shown it being more effective than the aspirin pill we can't seem to pop enough of. Side note- if you went a little heavy on the adult beverages and end up with a massive headache the next morning, make some hot tea with turmeric and it will ease your hangover faster than popping those aspirin pills. Bonus- it's all NATURAL!

3. Rheumatoid Arthritis: Due to its high anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is highly effective at helping people manage rheumatoid arthritis. In some cases, it has been suggested that with regular use, it could help prevent RA from developing to begin with.
